When they were in Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman he had married: [Bamidbar 12:1] This week’s reading reminds us of the danger in evil speech (Lashon Hara – לשון הרע).  Miriam and Aaron both spoke badly against Moses.  As a result, Miriam was afflicted with a skin disease (tzara’at, צָּרַעַת) often incorrectly referred to as Leprosy. As a society we seem to be fascinated with gossip.  Walk though any supermarket checkout and you’ll see the latest Tabloid tell us who is pregnant, getting a divorce or cheating on their spouse.  We have reality shows on Television which peer into the lives of others just so we can sit by the water cooler and share everything with others the next day.
