The Jewish tradition generally places a high value on learning and study, especially of religious texts. Torah study (compromising study of the Torah and more broadly of the entire Hebrew Bible as well as Rabbinic literature such as the Talmud and Midrash) is considered a religious obligation.

Ushpizin – Guests in Aramaic

Question: This is my first time observing Sukkot. I would appreciate it if you could explain it to me as easily as possible. “When a person sits in his Sukkah the Shechinah (God’s Divine Presence) spreads its wings (metaphor) over it, we dwell together with Him.” One of the important experiences of Sukkot is that of leaving the protection of our permanent dwellings and basking in the shade and protection of God’s presence. During the holiday, Jewish people recite the ushpizin prayer which symbolises the welcoming of seven "exalted guests" into the sukkah. These ushpizin, or guests, represent the seven shepherds of Israel. Each night of Sukkot, we invite sacred ancestors to enter our sukkah. On the first night, the night of chesed or love, we invite Abraham and Sarah. On the second night, the night of gevurah or strength, we invite Isaac and Rebekah. On the third [...]

Feast of Sukkot / Tabernacles

Chag Sukkot / חג הסוכות , translated means “the feast of Tabernacles", occurs for seven days. There is a quick transition from the high holidays, with their somber mood of repentance to a holiday of rejoicing and celebration, for which the people are commanded to build a hut (Sukkah; plural ...

An Ashkenazic Look at Sephardic Sukkot Customs

An Overview of Sukkot’s Traditions and Customs For forty years, as our ancestors traversed the Sinai Desert prior to their entry into the Holy Land, miraculous "clouds of glory" surrounded and hovered over them, shielding them from the dangers and discomforts of the desert. Ever since, we remember G‑d’s kindness and reaf ...

Yosef and the wealth of redemption

Yosef and the wealth of redemption

The writer of this article is not a believer in Maran Yeshua. Never the less his insights about Mashiach are well worth reading. HaShem gave to the Jewish people insight on His ways and how He truly operates, even if they may not understand it completely. We must remember that they are not rejecting Maran Yeshua the Rabbi, the Pharisee, the Zionist ...

Yosef’s credentials (Mashiach’s Credentials)

Yosef's credentials (Mashiach's Credentials)

Rav Chaim Friedlander asks some incisive questions in regards to the story of Yosef’s rise to power, that I believe are very instructive as to what we can expect from a true king of the Jewish people. He points out that it is remarkable that Yosef was raised to the unbelievable height of power as Egypt’s second in command in such a shor ...

Idiot's Guide to Islam (184 plus Videos)

I have been fully aware, from my residence both in the UK and the USA, that the ordinary person in the street has very little knowledge or understanding – if any – of the history, culture and religion of either the Arabs or the Muslims. I am also sure that this ignorance is wide-spread all over the non-Muslim world. It is also a fact th ...

Kavana, Prayer, and Torah Faithfulness

Kavana, Prayer, and Torah Faithfulness

In Matthew 6:1-18, Yeshua emphasizes the importance of kavana, of proper intention, in observance of Torah commands. According to Yeshua, the intention of observing the mitzvot should not be so that others see you doing them, but rather out of obedience to HaShem. When giving tzedaka, Yeshua states that one is to do so without drawing attention to ...

Mashiach is coming: 101

Question: I am wondering about Zechariah’s comment about Israel, Chapters 12-14. Do these chapters show Israel just prior to the Messiah’s return? It does not appear to fit any historical siege of Jerusalem in light of the fulfillment described in ch. 14? Am I watching this development take place now even though they are seeking peace? ...

Messianic Jewish Emuna: Disciples of Abraham

Messianic Jewish Emuna: Disciples of Abraham

Abraham did not need the scrolls of the Torah to tell him how to fulfill Hashem’s will. Generations before Mount Sinai, he was already living a Divinely directed life: “You hear My voice and keep My observances, My commandments, My laws and My Torah” (Bereishis 26:5). (Sefer Ahavas Chesed: Part III Chapter II Abrahams Way) “ ...
